THE NDEMBU ARCHIVES AND THEIR AFRICAN CONNECTIONS

This study focuses on the indigenous archives in Angola between the 17th and the 20th centuries, in particular those of the Ndembu (Jindembu) chiefdoms. The production of these documents; the profile of those who mastered writing and archiving; and the circulation of writers and their methods, materials, and practices will be the object of analysis. The purpose is also to follow circulations and connections between these chiefdoms’ archival cultures and similar practices in Kongo and colonial Mozambique. The approach will thus attend to the circulation of Ndembu documents and archival practices in other parts of the central and southeast African worlds.
